How to Apply for an E-Passport in Kenya

Kenya's e-passport offers enhanced security features and facilitates easier travel abroad. Applying for it is now an online process through the eCitizen platform. Here’s a detailed guide to help you complete your application seamlessly.


Step 1: Create an eCitizen Account

  1. Visit the official eCitizen website: www.ecitizen.go.ke.
  2. If you’re a new user, click on Create an Account and follow the prompts:
    • Enter your ID number, full name, and phone number.
    • Set a secure password.
  3. Log in using your credentials.

Step 2: Access the Immigration Services Section

  1. Once logged in, scroll down and select Department of Immigration Services.
  2. Click on Make Application and choose the appropriate passport application:
    • New Passport
    • Replacement
    • Child Passport

Step 3: Fill Out the Application Form

  1. Enter your personal details, including:
    • Name (as it appears on your ID)
    • Date of Birth
    • Gender
    • Citizenship details
  2. Upload the required documents:
    • A scanned copy of your ID.
    • A scanned copy of your birth certificate.
    • Two passport-sized photographs meeting the specifications.
  3. Select your preferred passport type (32-page, 48-page, or diplomatic passport).

Step 4: Pay for the Application

  1. The application fees are as follows:
    • 32-page passport: KSh 4,550
    • 48-page passport: KSh 6,050
    • 64-page passport: KSh 7,550
  2. Payments can be made through mobile money (M-Pesa), bank, or debit/credit card.

Step 5: Book an Appointment for Biometric Capture

  1. After payment, schedule an appointment at your nearest immigration office for biometric data capture.
  2. You’ll receive an application form and appointment slip. Print both and bring them to the immigration office.

Step 6: Attend the Biometric Capture Appointment

  1. On the scheduled date, go to the immigration office with:
    • The printed application form and appointment slip.
    • Your original ID and a copy.
    • Original birth certificate and a copy.
  2. Have your fingerprints and photo taken.

Step 7: Collect Your Passport

  1. Once your application is processed, you’ll receive an SMS notification to pick up your passport.
  2. Collect it from the immigration office where your biometrics were taken.
