How to Apply for a Kenyan Passport: A Step-by-Step Guide

Applying for a Kenyan passport is a straightforward process, but it requires the submission of specific documents and careful attention to details. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the application process:


Step 1: Gather the Required Documents

Before you start your application, ensure you have the following documents ready:

  • Kenyan National ID (for citizens above 18 years)
  • Birth Certificate (if under 18 years)
  • Passport-size photos (ensure they meet the passport photo guidelines)
  • KRA PIN Certificate (for adults)
  • Old Passport (if you are renewing)
  • Parent/Guardian’s ID (for minors)

Step 2: Create an Account on the eCitizen Portal

  1. Go to the eCitizen website.
  2. Create an account or log in if you already have one.
  3. Select the Department of Immigration Services from the available services.

Step 3: Complete the Application Form

  1. Once you log in, navigate to the Passport Application section.
  2. Select the appropriate passport type (e.g., ordinary or diplomatic).
  3. Fill in all the necessary details in the application form, including personal information, contact details, and passport preference.
  4. Ensure that all information is accurate and consistent with your documents.

Step 4: Upload the Required Documents

Upload the required documents, including your Kenyan National ID, passport-sized photos, birth certificate (if applicable), KRA PIN, and any other supporting documents.


Step 5: Pay the Application Fee

  1. After submitting the form and uploading your documents, proceed to pay the application fee.
  2. The payment can be made via mobile money (M-Pesa), credit card, or bank deposit through the eCitizen portal.
  3. The payment will be confirmed, and you will receive a payment receipt.

Step 6: Book an Appointment for Biometrics

  1. After payment, schedule an appointment for biometric data capture.
  2. Choose a location and date that is convenient for you. Available locations may include Huduma Centres or Department of Immigration offices.

Step 7: Visit the Passport Application Centre

  1. On the scheduled date, visit the passport application centre with your original documents for biometric data capture.
  2. Have your fingerprints and photo taken during the appointment.

Step 8: Wait for Processing

  • Your application will be processed, and the Department of Immigration Services will verify your details.
  • The processing time can take up to 10 working days for an ordinary passport, but you may request expedited processing at an additional fee.

Step 9: Collect Your Passport

  1. Once your passport is ready, you will receive a notification to collect it.
  2. Visit the passport collection centre to pick up your passport.
