How to Renew Your Kenyan Passport: A Simple Guide

If your Kenyan passport is about to expire or has already expired, renewing it is a straightforward process. Here’s a simple guide to help you renew your passport and avoid any travel disruptions:


Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before you begin the renewal process, ensure that you meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Your passport is still valid or expired within the last 10 years.
  • You’re a Kenyan citizen.
  • There are no major issues with your passport, such as significant damage.

Step 2: Visit the eCitizen Portal

  1. Go to the eCitizen website.
  2. Log in to your account or create one if you don’t already have one.

Step 3: Select Passport Renewal Service

  1. Once logged in, navigate to the Department of Immigration Services.
  2. Choose the Passport Application service and select Renew Passport.

Step 4: Complete the Passport Renewal Form

  1. Fill in your personal details, including your ID number and passport number.
  2. Provide any additional information as required in the form. Ensure that all details match those in your previous passport.

Step 5: Upload Required Documents

You will need to upload the following documents:

  • Old passport (for renewal)
  • Passport-sized photos (meeting the required specifications)
  • KRA PIN (for adults)
  • National ID (for adults) or Birth Certificate (for minors)

Step 6: Pay the Renewal Fee

Once the form is filled out and documents uploaded, proceed to pay the renewal fee. Payment can be done via:

  • Mobile Money (M-Pesa)
  • Credit Card
  • Bank Deposit through the eCitizen portal.

Step 7: Book an Appointment for Biometrics

  1. After payment, you will be required to schedule an appointment for biometric data capture.
  2. Choose your preferred appointment location (available at Huduma Centres or Immigration offices).

Step 8: Attend Your Appointment

  1. On the scheduled date, visit the selected centre with the original documents for biometric data capture.
  2. Your fingerprints and photograph will be taken during the appointment.

Step 9: Wait for Processing

Your passport renewal will be processed by the Department of Immigration Services. This typically takes 10 working days for ordinary passports, but expedited services are available for an additional fee.


Step 10: Collect Your Renewed Passport

Once your new passport is ready, you will receive a notification to collect it. Visit the passport collection centre to pick up your renewed passport.
