Requirements for Foreigners to Obtain a Kenyan Identity Card

Foreigners who meet certain conditions can apply for a Kenyan Identity Card, which grants access to various services and benefits within the country. If you are a foreigner living in Kenya and wish to apply for a Kenyan ID, here’s what you need to know:


Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a Kenyan Identity Card as a foreigner, you must meet the following conditions:

  1. Residency: Have legally resided in Kenya for at least 7 years.
  2. Work Permit: Be a holder of a valid work permit, permanent residency status, or have a valid student visa.
  3. Special Considerations: If you’re a refugee or a person of Kenyan origin, there may be different eligibility criteria.

Required Documents

Ensure you have the following documents to apply for your ID:

  1. Alien ID Card or Residency Permit – Proof of your legal stay in Kenya.
  2. Valid Passport – A copy of your passport with the valid visa or immigration stamp.
  3. Birth Certificate – A certified copy of your birth certificate.
  4. Proof of Kenyan Residence – A utility bill, lease agreement, or other official document proving your Kenyan residence.
  5. Passport-Sized Photos – Two recent, passport-compliant photos.
  6. Work/Residence Permit – A copy of your valid work or residence permit (if applicable).

Application Process

  1. Visit the Department of Immigration: Go to the Department of Immigration Services or the nearest Huduma Centre.
  2. Complete the Application Form: Request and fill out the Kenyan Identity Card application form for foreigners.
  3. Submit Documents: Attach the required documents to the application form.
  4. Biometric Data Capture: You’ll be required to provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo) for processing.

Step 4: Pay Application Fee

  • A fee is required for processing your Kenyan Identity Card application.
  • Payment is typically made at the immigration office or through mobile money.

Step 5: Wait for Processing

  • Your application will be processed, and you’ll be notified when your ID is ready for collection.
  • You can check your application status online via eCitizen or send your reference number via SMS to 20031 for updates.

Step 6: Collect Your Kenyan Identity Card

  • Once your application is approved, collect your Kenyan Identity Card from the immigration office or Huduma Centre.
